Landscape Ontario Awards of Excellence

This beautiful and contemporary uptown oasis landscape design is a Landscape Ontario Provincial Award of Excellence Winner.

The homeowner of this Toronto property contacted Jennifer Hayman Design Group to create a backyard design more suited to their family of five, with three growing boys.

To begin, our designer regraded the property, significantly changing the grading and drainage of the landscape and removing pooling water in the backyard.

Then, JHDG’s designer created an energy and flow of circulation through the backyard space with an Ipe walkway* from the elevated back door to a series of functional living spaces.

The backyard had an existing garage, which our designer determined would make an excellent space for a tween retreat. The standard garage door was changed to a door with frosted glass panels, offering lots of light, and creating a three-season room. The garage now acts not only as a hub for the homeowner’s sons to spend time with their friends, but also as a convenient place for catering during parties, or an enclosed sitting area during colder months.

A series of decks were created to accommodate for the property’s grades leading to a sunken stone terrace with seating for family dining and entertaining. An additional peagravel and stone seating area was added around a corten steel firebowl, as well as a breakfast nook in front of the garage, ultimately creating four unique and functional outdoor living areas for the family.

Furnishing was chosen to be contemporary, but timeless. Resin Muskoka chairs were placed around the firebowl, and a bistro set was placed in the breakfast nook. The dining set was deliberately chosen for it’s more contemporary aesthetic, with a blue frosted glass surface set on a sleek stainless steel framework with steel and white fabric seating for 10.

A fern and woodland garden was planted at the back, as an ode to the homeowner’s New Zealand heritage, and columnar beech trees were planted strategically for privacy.

Jennifer Hayman Design Group created a multi-functional living space for this client, that will grow with their family, be easy to maintain, and will ensure the value of their investment for years to come.

*Ipe is a very strong, high density hardwood decking that maintains it beauty for decades, even with heavy foot traffic.
